IT'S OBSCENE!
2025.
a triptych of diptychs
intaglio etchings, monotype & ink painting, photographs on 35mm color film printed on matte paper, ash and oak wooden frames.
Throughout my final year in college, I have been trying to find ways to push my practices in directions that were new to me. Some of this has included combining two of my primary mediums, photography and printmaking, as they both heavily inform how I practice the other and, at the same time, produce very different work. In the fall of 2024, I explored the process of photo etching, but this time around I wanted to find a way to keep both mediums separate from each other within the same body of work.
IT’S OBSCENE! is a series of three diptychs comprising a film photograph paired with a print, touching on themes of strangeness and incorrectness, intimacy, self-soothing behaviors, manifestations of OCD, and more. An important part of this work was how it accompanied me everywhere— my cameras traveled around with me and were only used when I felt compelled to make an image. My copper plates were brought with me to work on in work shifts, classes, rehearsals, events, as impractical as this was, so they would become time capsules of the period of my life during which they were created.
Each piece within the series has a story, which I am happy to share in conversation, but I’m hesitant to explain any individual aspect here because there’s no one right way to experience this work. What I will say is: take what you need, leave what you don’t, and let your curiosity guide you. Notice what you feel, and explore why you feel that way. I thank you for your time, eyes, and mind.
